What to know about lymphatic drainage

What is the lymphatic system? The lymphatic system, or lymphoid system, is an organ system in vertebrates that is part of the immune system, and complementary to the circulatory system. It consists of a large network of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, lymphoid organs, lymphoid tissues and lymph.

What does the lymphatic system do? The lymphatic system is part of the immune system. It keeps body fluid levels in balance and defends the body against infections. Lymphatic vessels, tissues, organs, and glands work together to drain a watery fluid called lymph from throughout the body.

What is lymphedema? Lymphedema is swelling that generally occurs in an arm or leg, but can also occur in the chest wall, abdomen, neck and genitals. The condition is caused by a blockage in the lymphatic system. Lymphedema is most commonly caused by lymph node removal or damage due to cancer treatment, trauma/injury, infection, chronic venous insufficiency or obesity.

What is the difference between lymphedema and edema? While edema can be a general term for acute swelling in the body, lymphedema is a chronic and severe condition that involves significant long-term edema fluid buildup. When someone has lymphedema, their lymphatic system is chronically overloaded and/or experiencing advanced dysfunction that becomes irreversible

What is lymphatic drainage?

A gentle and light, very methodical massage that may include diaphragmatic breathing. Very relaxing, great option for general health/wellness. A way to improve lymphatic flow for sluggish stuck systems or anyone who has had lymph nodes removed or damaged. A way for those who are unable to move on their own, para/quadrapolegic, to move the lymph throughout the body.

What it is Not:  Swedish massage,  body sculpting/contouring, incision drainage, deep work, weight loss, cellulite "miracle cure" or vigorous scrubbing of the tissue.
